Fr Alphonse celebrates 50 years

Hundreds of people in the diocese of Hwange and beyond converged in Tshotsholo to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fr Alphonse Trujilo one of the long serving priests in the diocese on the 13th August  2016.

The celebration which took place at St Martin de Porres Mission in Jotsholo was graced by the Bishop of the diocese His Lordship Albert Serrano.

Fr Alphonse a.k.a Nyathi also attracted to the colourful event, the local chief Mabhikwa among other traditional leaders who came to celebrate his life which was dedicated to human and infrastructural development within community.

Bishop Albert Serrano thanked Fr Nyathi for his dedicated service to the people of God which was expressed through building of several structures in various needy communities and writings in the local language which will go a long way in catechetical formation.

In his own reflections during his homily Fr Alphonse highlighted his personal understanding of priesthood, and religious life dedicated to working for the lord not because they were the best of the rest.
He said, they were chosen for a special service with all their limitations.

He added that the work of a priest was to unite the people with God sharing in the priesthood of Christ.

Referring to the work done (structures) in the communities, he said, it was because God worked in him and indeed through other priests and religious whose work has been to emancipate the people from poverty.

Fr Nyathi also took the chance to thank all the people from the youngest to the oldest who assisted him in his long dedicated ministry.

Noting his many failures, he also emphasised that the priests and religious were not in any way perfect but need the community’s prayers and support.

Fr Alphonse is a classmate of the bishop who also celebrated his 50th anniversary on the 2nd of July an event that also attracted a significant number of people of all walks of life.

He has been in Zimbabwe for the past 40 years with most of that time having been spent in Tshongokwe Mission before the liberation war and Jotsholo
