LEGION OF MARY


WHAT IS IT?


The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces (who is as far as the moon, bright as the sun and to Satan and his legionaries-terrible as an army set in battle array), have formed themselves into a Legion for service in the warfare which is perpetually waged by the Church against the world and its evil powers.

ORIGIN

  • The first enrolment of Legion of Mary took place at Myra house ,Francis Street,Dublin,Ireland at 8pm on 7 September 1921,the eve of the feast of Our Lady`s Nativity.
  • It was formed by Frank Duff along with a group of Catholic women and Fr Michael Toher a Priest of the Dublin Archdiocese.

OBJECTIVE

  • The objective of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, In Mary`s and the Church`s work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ.

THE PRAESIDIUM

  • The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a Praesidium
  • Each praesidium is named after a title of our Blessed lady e.g. Our Lady of Mercy
  • Members meet on a weekly basis
  • Where there are two or more praesidium, a Curia is formed, where executive members meet and discuss issues once a month.
  • In each diocese a Concilium is formed ,this is were all praesidium executive members meet once a month and it  is entitled to report all issues to the Dublin  Concilium.

  • Venue was St Mary`s Mission
  • Attendance: One hundred and eighty eight(188) members
